Dr. Fredrick Adams, assistant professor of foreign languages at the University of Louisiana at Monroe, recently published a book titled 鈥淟a Convergence des styles en art et litt茅rature dans La l茅gende d鈥橴lenspiegel,鈥 or 鈥淭he Convergence of the styles in art and literature in the novel La l茅gende d鈥橴lenspiegel.鈥

The book examines two Flemish artists of different time periods, Charles de Coster, A novelist from the 19th century and Pieter Bruegel, a painter from the 16th century, who both used their region and its inhabitants as themes.

Adams examines the similarities of both men, whose work dealt with life in 16th century Flanders, a historical European region now divided between France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

鈥淭his study suggests an affinity between De Coster and Pieter Bruegel the Elder with respect to their representation of Flanders,鈥 Adams said. 鈥淏y their style and manner of representation, both artists portray the character of the Low Countries.鈥
