University of Louisiana at Monroe School of Nursing professor Dr. Linda Sabin presented a research paper at the 26th annual National Research Conference of the American Association for the History of Nursing, held in St. Paul, Minn.



The conference was held from Sept. 24-27 with the University of Minnesota College of Nursing鈥檚 sponsorship.

Sabin鈥檚 paper is titled 鈥淕limpses of Excellence: Contributions of African American Nurses in the Deep South in the 19th Century.鈥 The paper covers nurses who provided help during the great Yellow Fever epidemics and other outbreaks of communicable diseases in Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.

鈥淚 studied diaries, census reports, business directories and secondary sources such as local histories,鈥 Sabin said. 鈥淚 identified almost 100 nurses who had written records of service to the victims of communicable diseases.鈥

In addition to her paper, Sabin鈥檚 presentation included sculpted art dolls and handcrafted journal quilts to help tell these nurses鈥 stories.

鈥淭his was an incredible meeting with scholars from five countries,鈥 Sabin said. 鈥淚t was a great opportunity to exchange ideas and mentor doctoral students.鈥

The American Association for the History of Nursing is an organization of nurse historians from the United States, Canada and Europe. This group meets once a year to recognize and study the significance of history to the profession.
